Yankees Continue to Lead Toughest Division in Baseball:

We're almost to the half point of the Major League Baseball
Season and the New York Yankees lead the toughest division in baseball by 3
games over the Tampa Rays and Boston Red Sox. The Yankees have been doing
with the an impressive combination of great performances from players like
Robinson Cano. Cano leads the Yankees in batting average at .361 and home
runs with 14. He's quickly becoming the best slugging second baseman in a
long time. Nick Swisher and Brett Gardner are two unlikely bats that propel
the Yankees to the top of the division.
The usually suspects for the Yankees aren't producing as they should be.
Alex Rodriguez leads the team with 51 RBIs, but guys like Mark Teixeira and
Jorge Posada aren't putting up the same numbers from a year ago. Posada's
been injured a bit this season. His replacement Francisco Cervelli is
filling in very admirable. Cervelli's perhaps been the biggest revelation.
After Joe Mauer resigned with the Twins, the Yankees understood they would
need to develop a catcher of the future and Cervilli will most likely be
that guy. He's learning to call great games and can produce in big spots at
times.
The pitching continues to be a strong point, C.C. Sabathia continues to
justify his contract by pitching a lot of innings and giving the bullpen a
rest every once in awhile. Javier Vasquez has settled down into a number
four start nicely and Phil Hughes has done a great job as the fifth starter.
The bullpen continues to be a strong suit, as Mariano Rivera seems to be
truly ageless. The Yankees will have to expect more production from
Teixeira, but it helps that the team keeps winning without him playing at
his best. It's still a tough division and there's a lot of baseball left to
be played.
