USC Hit with Huge Sanctions:

Lack of Institutional Control, it's what the University
of Southern California was accused of during the tenure of Reggie Bush and
O.J. Mayo during their time at the school. The NCAA handed down a huge blow
to the University, loss of 30 scholarships, vacated wins from Bush's tenure
at USC. They'll also lose their BCS Championship from 2004-05, but not the
Associated Press National Championship Award. The Trojans won't be able to
attend a bowl game for two years either.
The four year study into USC showed that Mayo and Bush were recruited to the
school through lavish gifts, including free lodging and other amenities.
Really, who is to blame for these transgressions. Bush and Mayo should be
blamed first, because they accepted the gifts without thinking twice. The
head coaches, Tim Floyd and Pete Carroll should be punished in some form
two, but wait, neither are with the university.
That leaves former Carroll staffer Lane Kiffin to clean up the mess left
from Carroll. Kiffin told recruits that there wouldn't be any sanctions. It
really must be fun to go to USC, where the reality is what is created in the
minds of the coaches and fans. Cheating in college sports is frowned upon,
but rarely does anything happen. Football and basketball generate so much
revenue that most major universities will continue to find ways to get the
top talent, it will lead to more investigations but the institutions will
continue to operate improperly.
Kiffin and the university will appeal the sanctions and they may get some of
the penalties reversed. That shouldn't happen, the NCAA needs to show big
time universities are just as responsible as the smaller schools when it
comes to recruiting and the time these young people spend on the campus. USC
lived under the illusion for years that they were just the 33rd NFL
franchise, well if you're considering going there, be aware that you do have
to go to class and everything will not be handed to you.
