The New York Yankees are going through what most
prognosticators predicted. Can the aging veterans stay healthy and play in
150 games this season. Jorge Posada, Curtis Granderson, Nick Johnson and
Alfredo Aceves are all on the disabled list. Johnson expects to miss a few
months, but Posada might be the biggest loss.
Posada knows all the Yankees pitchers. Francisco Cervelli fills in
admirably, hitting .400 for a period of time. Cervelli needs Posada around
to teach him about catching in the major leagues. The catcher is the most
important position in baseball. It's why most major league managers are
former catchers. They need to understand how the game unfolds. They work
with the pitching and the hitting.
Most catchers either provide great offense or solid defense. A few are great
at both, Joe Mauer, Matt Weiters is on his way towards being a complete
catcher. The Yankees miss Posada's bat. Johnson's injury allows manager Joe
Girardi the luxury of putting Posada in as a designated hitter and rotating
him with Marcus Thames. In 2008, when the Yankees missed the playoffs, many
believed it was because Posada missed extensive playing time. He really is
the glue, part of the great Yankees catchers like Thurman Munson, Elston
Howard, Girardi and Yogi Berra.
Teams that win championships do so with a great catcher that manages the
pitching staff. Most catchers call games and those that call the games well
