Oswalt Only Big Name Left Before Trade Deadline:

July 31 is a busy day in Major League Baseball. Most teams look to unload the salaries of their highest paid players. Teams without a chance also send a proven veteran to a team still in the race for the future. This year, it's going to be somewhat anti-climactic. Cliff Lee's already been dealt. Dan Haren, another top pitching arm went from the D-Backs to the Angels. That leaves Roy Oswalt as the lone impact starting pitcher that's expected to get dealt on or before the 31st.

Oswalt will choose the team he goes to though. He has a full no trade clause in his contract. He's been very loyal to the Astros over the years. He wants to be traded to a contender. The problem is most teams are asking a lot and few teams can offer exactly the right package. It looks like the closest team is the St. Louis Cardinals. Oswalt would put the team over the top, even though his numbers haven't been that strong this season.

The best position player available is Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Jayson Werth. Werth would only be a rental because he's a free agent after this season. How much are teams willing to spend on a player they'll most likely have him for a few months. They must also see if they can sign him to a long term deal. It's going to cost which ever team he gets traded to. Adam Dunn is another important bat available through trade. The Washington Nationals are working on a long term deal, but if one doesn't get done, expect him to be dealt on July 31.

Oswalt being dealt isn't a sure thing yet. Werth will bring back some quality prospects. Contending teams are always looking for bullpen help, so if no big names get traded, expect teams to add to matchup specialists to their bullpen. Trade time brings hope to teams that are looking for that missing piece, while some teams get important prospects for the future.
