NFL Miami Dolphins:

Two years ago the Miami Dolphins posted a league-worst 1-15 record. Bill Parcells was brought in, fired most of the staff, including the head coach, Cam Cameron, who he replaced with Tony Sparano, whom Parcells had worked with in Dallas. The Dolphins also let go of Jason Taylor and Zach Thomas, both Pro Bowlers and cornerstones of the defense. When I saw this I figured they were dedicated to going into a “rebuilding period” and were letting these two look for greener pastures elsewhere out of mercy for these veteran Dolphins. When they brought in Chad Pennington when the Jets released him after getting Brett Favre, I figured he was just going to be another short-lived member of the interminable Dolphins’ search for a quarterback after Dan Marino retired in 2000, which had included other big-name quarterbacks like Trent Green and Dante Culpepper.

The Dolphins started the next season unimpressively; they went into week 8 with a 2-4 record. However, they won the next four consecutive games, and won nine of their last ten, including a season finale 24-17 victory over the Jets in New York to clinch the AFC East division title which I was lucky enough to be at and, let me tell you, was one of the most exciting games I have ever seen.

The loss to the Ravens in the first round of the playoffs was uncharacteristic for the Dolphins. Most notable was Pennington’s four interceptions: he had thrown seven in the entire regular season. But despite this lackluster end, the team had not only shown great improvement in 2008 but had played a downright excellent season. The team had the best turnover ratio in the league (+17), the offensive line cut the number of sacks by nearly a third from the previous season, and there is hope that the “quarterback situation” might finally have been solved. The team had success both in the air and on the ground, and Ricky Williams has gone from being a destabilizing factor in the lineup to being a valuable extra variable in both the run and pass games.

Not much changed over the off-season. The draft class looks decent enough, and the rumor that Chad Henne will be the starting quarterback in 2010 is probably the most important roster news. The verdict is still out on the return of Jason Taylor, but it certainly won’t be detrimental. All in all, the prospects for the 2009 season are quite good.
