NFL Football Draft Speculation:

Author: Michael Licata

It's only a week away, the greatest gamble in sports, the 2010 NFL Draft. Moving the Draft to prime time on Thursday night is a gutsy move, but people will be watching. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell had a great idea for prime time draft showcase, but it drags on an already exhausting process.

Yes, every one wants to know who's going first. According to almost all the mock drafts, the St. Louis Rams will draft former Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford. After that, it's a guess as to which defensive tackle, Gerald McCoy or Ndamukong Suh will be the next player off the board to the Detroit Lions with the number two overall pick. Which player do you wish was available to choose at which ever spot they draft at? Are you expecting a franchise quarterback this draft? Do you want a workhorse back for the next decade? There's all these types of players. The great unknown is which players adjust to the NFL well and which players become busts.

Every one loves a train wreck, not literally, but we do enjoy watching people fail and self-destruct. This is the NFL's version of that. Granted, there's only a few Ryan Leafs that come along and have a complete meltdown. There's also JaMarcus Russell, the leader at LSU that turned up at Oakland Raiders workouts overweight and it looked like he hadn't done any football related activities all off season. There's also the stories of Tom Brady, a late round pick that may become one of the greatest quarterback's in league history. There's stories of successes and failures, entire drafts traded away for Ricky Williams. The draft is the NFL's version of which player will develop into an All-Pro and which player sells insurance in three years.

It's all speculation. The performance based evaluations are over for the most part. It's just interviewing individual players, seeing how they'll adapt to playing in a given city. It's up the general managers, head coaches and personal managers to decide which players fit their system. It's so complex, to trust your scouts enough to draft a kid in the fifth round from North Dakota State or some other obscure school. It's a roulette experience that could set your team up for a Super Bowl run in three years, or your team could end up with nothing and do the same thing in three years.
