NFL 2010 Draft Article:

When teams to win in the National Football League, a great
quarterback captains the offense. The New Orleans Saints won the Super Bowl
with Drew Brees quarterbacking a great offense. They faced the Indianapolis
Colts, who are led by Peyton Manning. It makes the evaluation process even
more difficult for General Managers and scouts each year. The evaluation
process is streamlined, from the combine in February to Pro Days at the
schools and finally, the Draft at the end of April.
Most college programs went away from pro style offenses, valuing the spread
offense that score points quickly. This type of offense doesn't really work
in the NFL because the defenses are too fast, the players are better and the
coaches prepare better than most colleges.
The 2010 NFL Draft's group of quarterbacks showed tremendous potential
during their college days. Sam Bradford would've gone number one overall
last season but stayed in Norman, OK to have another chance at a National
Championship. It didn't work out so well, he injured his shoulder and missed
most of the season. Bradford's still expected to go high in the draft, even
possibly to St. Louis number one overall. Jimmy Clausen, the former Notre
Dame QB, is expected to be the second QB off the board, as high as
Washington or Seattle. His stock was made from playing in a pro style
offense under Charlie Weis while at ND.
Those two are the only expected first round QBs taken in 2010. The
second-tier of QBs doesn't exactly get fans in a frenzy, but given the right
development path, could make quality starters in the NFL. Tony Pike should
go off the board sometime in the third or fourth round. Dan LeFevour is the
consensus choice to go after Clausen and Bradford. Both players have the
tools to be successful in the NFL, but it's going to take some to groom
them. Jevon Snead could be grouped in this category as potential, but his
value's slipped with poor showings at the Combine and his pro day.
The most interesting project in this draft would be Florida's Tim Tebow.
Tebow had one of the most impressive college careers ever. His leadership
skills are off the charts, but can it make up for his lack of arm strength
and proven quarterbacking skills. He changed his mechanics and unveiled them
at his pro day on March 17 at Florida. Many draft experts don't see Tebow
going until the third or fourth round. Former coach Tony Dungy stated that
Tebow will go in the first round. Coaches become enamored with his stats
from college, his presence in the media room. It's believed to save a
floundering franchise, Jacksonville will take Tebow to sell tickets. It's a
possibility but he's going to need to learn how to play quarterback in the
NFL. There's a difference between college and the NFL.
Tebow can be successful in the NFL. His tremendous determination can get
only get him so far. He should be successful given time to become a better
pocket passer. General Managers seek input from all kinds of sources, mostly
internally. The team that takes Tebow will sell some tickets in the
preseason, but the fan base shouldn't get too excited right now. It's going
to take time.
The draft decision making process takes many months, it gives fans hope. The
NFL's parody always provides optimism that 'my team will be next'. Bringing
in the next franchise quarterback in the draft can bring you a championship,
or set your entire franchise back at least two seasons. It's a roulette game
where team's gamble with the hopes and dreams of their fans. Fans can't get
enough of the draft. Tune in to see if your team gets turned around with the
addition of a new signal caller.
