New York Yankees vs. Boston red Soxs:

Author: Michael Licata

The Major League Baseball regular season starts with the greatest rivalry in history. The Boston Red Sox will host the New York Yankees. It's going to get the stage for 19 games with every game meaning positioning for the post season.

The history between the franchises began with the most lopsided deal in the history of baseball, selling Babe Ruth to the Yankees and spend the next 86 years not winning a World Series title. Red Sox faithful watched as Ruth and the Yankees went on to win 26 titles while the Red Sox suffered some of the worst defeats in baseball history.

Bucky Dent's two run home run in the 1978 one game playoff, Mookie Wilson's dribbler through Bill Buckner's legs in Game 6 of the 1986 World Series. It was all bad omens and blamed on the curse of the Bambino. I really think the turn around happened during the 1999 season. Led by Nomar Garciaparra and Pedro Martinez, the Red Sox met the Yankees in the American League Championship series. The Yankees defeated the Red Sox in five games. The Yankees went on to sweep the Atlanta Braves in the World Series for title number 25.

The Red Sox and Yankees met in the again during the 2003 post season and once again, the Curse of the Bambino reared its head, as Aaron Boone became a Yankees folk hero hitting a game winning 12th inning home run off Tim Wakefield. The next season, something changed. The Yankees acquired Alex Rodriguez during that offseason, while the Red Sox hired a new manager and found team of players that could play well together and win games. One move including dealing Garciaparra at the trade deadline and bringing in Orlando Cabrera to play short stop. Another key acquisition at the deadline was utility outfielder Dave Roberts The two teams had a brawl during the season.

The post season series began with the Yankees dominating the first three games and taking a three game lead in the series. Against the best closer in post season history, Roberts stole second base and that move transformed the entire series and the Red Sox went on to win the series in seven games. Red Sox fans believed the whole time, the rest of the baseball world was stunned as the Red Sox went on to end the 86 year curse and win their first championship since 1918.

The Red Sox went on to win another championship in 2007 and it seemed that the Red Sox controlled the American League East. This season the rivalry will pick up again. The Red Sox reloaded with third baseman Adrian Beltre and added short stop Marco Scuturo. The Yankees improved their defense with Curtis Granderson. The Red Sox added John Lackey to their rotation. The Yankees added Javier Vasquez to be their third/fourth starter.

It should be a battle to see which team wins the AL East with the other most likely to get the wild card. It should be a battle and when Beckett and Sabathia square off on Sunday, it should provide a playoff atmosphere on opening night.
