NCAA To Study July Recruiting

The NCAA decided to not eliminate its July college
basketball recruiting period. It’s a great win for the smaller schools that
have small scouting staffs and even less in travel funds. The NCAA Board of
Directors decided to take a one year look at summer recruiting. The proposal
to end summer recruiting came from the Collegiate Commissioners Association.
There were valid claims made by on both sides of the argument.
Proponents stated that coaches would stay on campus longer and get the new
students acclimated to campus life. It also states that the measure would
weed out third party influences during the decision process. The opposed
contingent thought ending summer recruiting would increase school costs. The
evaluation process would also be affected because coaches don’t think
they’ll have enough time to correctly evaluate recruits. This would lead in
increased contact with third party influences.
Schools in smaller conferences cannot afford to send coaches and scouts
across the country to look for recruits. Summer camps provide a showcase for
the top talent and all the coaches attend the camp. It’s also an opportunity
to see some of the more unheralded players invited to the camp. The NCAA
tournament is the best postseason. 65 teams have an equal chance to win the
NCAA Championship. The small schools have the same chance as the top-earning
schools to win the championship. Let’s not give them a bigger advantage by
taking away the summer recruiting period.
