NBA Players Have Too Much Influence on Front Office Decisions:

It looks like LeBron James impact will be felt for a long time by a lot of people. The Cleveland Cavaliers fired their head coach in Mike Brown and now general manager Danny Ferry is following Brown out the door. If James does resign with the Cavs, it looks like he'll be in position to pick and choose which coach and general manager he wants to play for. This happens rarely in sports, but it does happen most in the NBA.

It's a star driven league. Phil Jackson is a great coach, but it gets pretty easy when you're coaching two of the greatest of all time. Jordan pretty much ran the show in Chicago and James gets the same freedom in Cleveland. Kobe Bryant gets the same control over his team. When he needed a big man to compliment Andrew Bynum, the team went out and got Pau Gasol. Gasol obviously paid off, especially in game one of the NBA Finals against the Celtics.

Players shouldn't have that much control over the team. The decision making should be in the hands of the general manager, not the players. It's a dynamic seen in other sports, the Yankees may consult Derek Jeter on major decisions that will improve the team, but not every one. It shows how much pull the players have in the NBA. There's no one player that influences his team more than James and Bryant affect their team's front offices.

Peyton Manning didn't get to choose a successor to Tom Moore after Moore retired as an offensive coordinator. Yes, Manning's been around so much it, he probably writes the playbooks in Indianapolis. That's the only player that has any control over the decision making process. Players should leave the important decisions to the talent evaluators and let them make the roster, not the best player.
