College Basketball March Madness 2010:

The second weekend of NCAA's March Madness is upon us. It means the teams that survived will have another opportunity to shock, thrill and methodically defeat all in one game. The tournament showcases the best teams and the second weekend means better basketball games as it gets closer to the Final Four.

The most intriguing game is Thursday, as Ivy champion Cornell meets perennial winner Kentucky in Syracuse. Cornell can play with any team in the country. Kentucky is an extremely athletic team that doesn't like to play a half court style of play. For the Big Red to win, Cornell find ways to slow guards John Wall and Eric Bledsoe while continuing to light up the three point line. Kentucky also has the advantage of Coach John Calipari's extensive experience coaching well into March. Expect Cornell to play a strong game, but Kentucky's the most talented team left in the tournament and shouldn't suffer a let down this soon. Kentucky's athleticism will beat Cornell's experience.

Duke versus Purdue is another intriguing match up this weekend. The Blue Devils have seven foot center Brian Zoubek and forward Kyle Singler to play inside against the Boilermakers. Purdue has overcome Robbie Hummel's injury to get this far. The Boilermakers rely a lot on their defense to win games. Defense usually wins championships, but it's going to be hard to win if the shots aren't falling. Expect Kris Kramer and the Boilermakers to play well enough for an upset. Both teams play in the power conferences so this stage doesn't scare either team.

Syracuse's depth helped it get this far after faulting in the Big East tournament. Butler's spent a lot of time playing against bigger conference opponents and showed time after time they can stick with the teams. Andy Rautins and Wes Johnson can lead the Orange all the way to the National Championship game. Both shoot the ball really well and Johnson attacks the basket. This might be the round where not having Arinze Onuaku in the middle of their 2-3 zone may hurt them. Gordon Hayward leads the Bulldogs, playing with heart and aggressiveness that's gotten Butler this far. I expect Boeheim and the Orange to dominate this game, ending Butler's run in the tournament.

Xavier is a team that's made quite a few appearances in the Sweet 16. With first year coach, Chris Mack the Musketeers are led by Jordan Crawford and his tremendous scoring ability. He's averaging 27.5 points per game in the tournament. Kansas State and Xavier have matched up each of the last four seasons, so there's familiarity between the two teams. It should make for a good game.

St. Mary's has the best chance to upset a very good Baylor team. The Gaels have played many tough teams and are ready to break into the big time with an Elite 8 appearance. Having Omar Samham averaging 30 ppg helps St. Mary's upset bid. West Virginia and Bob Huggins should also have an easy time getting into the second game during this weekend. Washington's playing really well, but I think Huggins has a complete game plan ready for the Huskies. Even without Kailan Lucas, Michigan State should make it the second game, over Northern Iowa. Evan Turner should lead Ohio State all the way to Indianapolis for the Final Four after Kansas' elimination.

The tournament presents opportunities for smaller teams to defeat the giants from the major conferences. It usually falls that way, but a major teams with great talent always meet up in the Final Four each year. I don't expect it to come out any other way this season. Expect Ohio State, Kentucky and Syracuse to be in the Final Four. Saint Mary's could shock the basketball world by defeating Duke. It would make a great story and compelling basketball. Either way, it's a wonderful time to be a college basketball fan and all the games this weekend should be entertaining.
