Well, the free agency period for the NBA doesn't start
until this summer. Let the speculation begin. The Boston Celtics sent the
Cleveland Cavaliers home Thursday night, winning their series 4-2 and
sending LeBron James home for the offseason. It begins the biggest offseason
in NBA history. Teams like the New York Knicks, New Jersey Nets and other
franchises have been preparing for this offseason for years.
The largest player available just got eliminated from the playoffs. Where
James goes is the greatest mystery. Will he stay in Cleveland because they
give him the best chance of winning now? Is he tired of carrying the entire
franchise and not getting enough help from the front office? Shaq didn't
work out, Antawan Jamison disappeared on the defense end of the floor
against the Celtics. Does James yearn to play with another high profile free
agent like Dwyane Wade or Chris Bosh. Bosh will leave Toronto. Wade is the
bigger questions. Chicago seems like a landing spot for some of these free
agents because of Michael Jordan's legacy.
Going after Jordan's legacy seems like a fool's errand. Players don't have
to prove they're better than Jordan now because he's not playing anymore.
The Bulls will probably get one high profiled free agent. James, Wade and
Bosh will sit down to discuss possible destinations but it's unlikely all
three land in one location, unless they agree to a massive pay cut. It would
be interesting if that happened, because which ever team these three guys
went to would expected to win the championship, or two or three in a row. It
would depend on how long the contracts lasted.
Every one is chiming in already. President Obama is making a play for James
to join the Bulls. New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg commented that James would
be sold hard on living in NYC, stating that NYC is the biggest stage in the
world. James isn't thinking about his future right now. He's trying to
figure out where his team went and how he lost the series to the Celtics.
It's going to be an interesting offseason and the fun's just beginning.
Circle July 1 on your calendars, because that's when we'll see what happens
when James, Wade, Bosh, Stoudimire all make decisions on where they're
playing next season.
