JaMarcus Russell Released:

The JaMarcus Russell experiment in Oakland seems to be
over. NFLPA President Kevin Mawae can't get a job this season. It's the
the veteran experience of not being wanted and looking to catch on with
another team. Brian Westbrook is weighing his options after visiting with
the St. Louis Rams. One free agent that has a ton of options is Darren
Sharper, the Super Bowl champion met with Jacksonville, with plans on
visiting the Miami Dolphins and Dallas Cowboys before making his decision
on where to play next season.
Russell might get a chance if a starter goes down early in the season and
he can come in without all the expectations of being a number one pick.
It's something that Sam Bradford must avoid. Bradford will get every
chance to succeed as a starter for the Rams. Jimmy Clausen might get the
same consideration with the Carolina Panthers, but he has a more proven
starter in Matt Moore to contend with to earn the starting job. One
competition that should be interesting to watch is the competition for the
starting signal caller of the Denver Broncos.
Kyle Orton is the incumbent starter, with Brady Quinn as a free agent
signee and the addition of Tim Tebow in the first round makes it very
interesting. Head Coach Josh McDaniels stated that Tebow will be a
quarterback and nothing else. Let's be honest, he's got great intangibles,
but he isn't ready to start in the NFL. The race will be between Quinn and
Orton. Orton won some games for the Broncos last season. If McDaniels can
coach Quinn up, maybe he can regain some of the college magic he had in
Notre Dame.
It should be interesting to see how Colt McCoy develops as a quarterback
in the NFL. It's a saying in Cleveland that the most popular player on the
Browns is the backup quarterback. Mike Holmgren and Eric Mangini won't bow
to fan's desire to see McCoy too soon. Jake Delhomme seems like a seat
warmer as McCoy learns the offense and playing in the NFL. These are some
of the most intriguing early season story lines as offseason work outs
continue.
