Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig takes a lot of
heat from baseballs fans for his tenture at the helm of MLB. From canceling
the World Series to the rampant steroid use under his watch, Selig rarely
takes credit for some of the innovations he's brought to baseball. Two of
his biggest contributions are the wild card playoff spot and Interleague
Series play.
Obviously, a main proponent of Interleague play were the owners of the New
York Mets and New York Yankees. A subway series guarantees a sellout for
both teams and the intrigue of two teams that play each other six times a
year dominates the back pages of the New York sports pages. The Chicago
White Sox and Chicago Cubs share a same common hatred for each other. Many
Cubs fans loathe the fact that the White Sox were able to break their World
Series drought while the Cubs is going on 102 years strong. There's also the
highway rivalry that exists between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Los
Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The newest rivalry happens in the beltway that is
our nation's capital, the Baltimore Orioles and the Washington Nationals.
These two teams need the other team's fans to sell tickets anyway.
Interleague play was designed to sell tickets and it's working great. Fans
get an opportunity to see their favorite player or team in another market.
Selig takes a lot of crap from baseball puritsts, but Interleague play
provides unique matchups along with a chance to see possible World Series
teams go at in during the regular season.
