Duke wins National Title:

Butler losing to Duke provides hope to all other schools in NCAA college basketball that call themselves "mid-majors". The Horizon League champs were picked by the majority of America to lose in the first weekend of the tournament. To make it all the way to the National Championship Game, that's a feat too. They almost beat a true Goliath in Duke as well. It was all for naught as the mighty team from Durham defeated the Butler Bulldogs after a truly great basketball game.

It wasn't exciting to watch at times, the teams played great defense and didn't shoot the ball too well, but it was still very entertaining. Every possession meant something, it made the game great. The Bulldogs had one great player in Gordon Heyward along with Sheldon Mack. Duke's Kyle Singler and Brian Zoubek provided enough force to defeat Butler in a great ending.

Butler head coach Brad Stevens understands that his name will come up in head coaching searches at major schools. Cornell head man Steve Donahue left the Big Red to take an ACC job at Boston College. Oliver Purnell left Clemson to coach at DePaul. Stevens took his team so far into the tournament that big schools needed to fill their coaching vacancy before the tournament ended. Stevens will probably get some consideration if one or two major coaches make the leap from college to the NBA. The new owner of the New Jersey Nets wants to offer Duke coach K 15-18 million a year to coach in the NBA. He didn't take the Lakers job a few years ago, he shouldn't try to gamble with another rebuilding job, even if it's a quick one with LeBron James. The job seems attractive because of the new arena in Brooklyn in a few years, but the transition to NBA coach is a rocky road for most college coaches.

It's a different game, dealing with 18 year old kids that are still learning the game to professionals that go through a grueling 82 game schedule. It's a different experience too. The NBA is a star driven league that usually builds teams around one great player and a bunch of solid role players. College coaches must teach and train each student because they're an investment. NBA players are investments, but not as much as in college. The NCAA places tough restrictions on contact with recruits, practice time. The NBA has none of this, making it easier for pure basketball coaches to coach important players while not angering the older, role players.

It's the end of the college basketball season and the coaching carousel started to turn with some names going to different schools. Now we'll see which players decide to jump college and go right to the NBA. That rule keeps a lot of quality players in college for one year, but it doesn't help programs build on success from one year to another. It should be longer, like the NFL policy of three years out of college. It's something that the NBA will look to judge during the next round of collective bargaining.
