A-Rod Achievement Muted By Allegations:

Finally, Alex Rodriguez hit his 600th home run. It's an
important home run, A-Rod becomes the seventh player to hit 600 home runs.
He's the fastest player to hit that many home runs. The consensus is that it
isn't as meaningful because of his admitted performance enhancing drug
admission. A-Rod admitted that him and his cousin took PEDs for a three year
stretch. It tainted every record he would achieve.
It could have been a glorious celebration in the Bronx. It would add to the
lore of the New York Yankees franchise. It just took so long. It began to
wear on A-Rod the first series. Then it took its toll on the rest of the
team. They lost first place in the American League East to the Tampa Rays.
It took the 5-1 victory coupled with a Rays loss to earn a tie in first on
August 5. Derek Jeter was the first to embrace A-Rod once the feat was over.
It was a contrast in how two players decided to play the game of baseball.
A-Rod went the way of most major leaguers when he decided to use boli, a
certain type of PED.
There's also a tremendous contrast between Jeter and A-Rod. Many put A-Rod
on the list of the most hated athletes in all of sports. Jeter, according to
one poll, is the most marketable athlete. He has endorsement deals with Ford
and Gillette. A-Rod tarnished his career with PEDs. Jeter will easily get
into the Baseball Hall of Fame on the first ballot. A-Rod is going to have
to wait a few years. They can't deny him entrance, but maybe make him wait
for three years, the same amount of time he admitted to using PEDs while
with the Texas Rangers.
A-Rod could have quested after the all-time home run record clean. It would
be great to see if he could break Barry Bond's record of 762, or Hank
Aaron's true record of 755. Bonds will be the last to admit his use, but
could one imagine the goodwill generated by A-Rod's pursuit? He might have
even fallen short, which would make him a tragic hero. A-Rod could hit 800
home runs. It still one great feat. Most players could load up on PEDs, cork
their bats and still not get to the level of A-Rod. Launching 600 home runs
is a great achievement. It's just unfortunate that he had to do it with
assistance besides his great hand-eye coordination and tremendous
conditioning.
